These developments have no doubt made recruiters and hiring managers more diligent when reviewing applicant’s credentials, and have probably lead to the implementation of background screening programs in many companies.

While diligent hiring managers and background screening are able to catch some of the job applicants who use fake degrees and references, there is still the problem of the diploma mills themselves. According to this linked article in Business Insider, many prospective students are duped into applying to diploma mills for their post-secondary educations. The article gives several tips regarding what to look for when evaluating whether or not an online school is just another diploma mill.

If your company hires staff from overseas, thorough background screening is absolutely essential. Here is the link to an article I just read about raids that were conducted at four different locations in Kashmir, India. No….these were not counter-terrorism raids. These raids were in response to the discovery of a fake degree and placement scam in which agents are using fake credentials to place clients in jobs in different countries. The agency that conducted these raids previously received complaints about people from that region using fake medical degrees to obtain jobs as “doctors” in various countries.

This problem is not isolated to the Kashmir region of India. There have been a multitude of stories about unqualified H-1B visa hires from all over India, and there is no doubt that this problem is universal. Fake degrees are not only being used by oversees job applicants but by domestic applicants as well. Once again, thorough background screening of job applicants is essential for employers who want to make sure that they are getting someone who is qualified to do their job. It is unfortunate that companies have doctors and nurses on their staff who may only be qualified to work on General Hospital.

Precision Background Screening does not only provide criminal background checks, but also domestic and international education verification, professional license verification and professional reference verification. To find out more about the services we can provide your company and our very competitive rates, please contact us at 1-800-348-0511 or info@precisionbackgroundscreening.com.

I just read an article about a company called CareerExcuse. I am actually impressed by the people who came up with this business. They are very enterprising. Honestly! This website helps people with no work experience by providing them with references for their resumes. For a fee, a job seeker can use any of CareerExcuse’s 200 companies as references. By the way, none of those 200 companies really exist! When a hiring manager or human resource personnel contacts one of CareerExcuse’s fake companies for a reference, they will “confirm” (tell a bold faced lie) that the candidate worked there and that he/she was a good employee. This article highlights why employers should utilize a professional reference verification service to verify a candidate’s experience. Here is a link to the full article.
