The days leading up to Valentine’s Day and the days following it constitute one of the busiest times of the year for online dating. It is also one of the busiest times of the year for criminals looking to take advantage of individuals seeking love and companionship. A lot of people tend to get desperate, anxious and frustrated this time of year, and online fraudsters see this as a big opportunity to use their emotions against them. Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t become a victim:

1. Get to know the person, not the profile, and ask plenty of questions – don’t rush into an online relationship.

2. Check to make sure the person is genuine by putting their name, profile pictures or any repeatedly-used phrases and the term ‘dating scam’ into a search engine (this is a cheap, easy way of doing a background check).

3. Talk to your friends and family about your dating choices. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them.

4. Never send money to someone you have met online, no matter what reason they give or how long you have been speaking with them.

5. Don’t move the conversation off the dating site messenger until you are confident the person is who they say they are.

6. Be wary of new “friends” who want to know all about you but reveal little of themselves.

7. Watch out for bad use of English – many scams originate from abroad and their messages can show little regard for spelling and punctuation.

8. Are they pushing too hard, too fast? It can take time for genuine love to develop but a fraudster is on the clock and will try to rush you.

9. They want to meet up but can’t afford it and want you to pay their fare.

10. Common reasons to ask for money include not having access to their bank accounts, having to pay medical bills, or using a hard luck story involving a child.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Individuals doing online dating must realize that everyone they meet on these sites is a complete stranger. Since you know absolutely nothing about these people, the first step you should take when deciding to move forward in any type of relationship is to verify their identity. The only sure way of doing this is to run a background check. A thorough background check can be conducted with as little information as a person’s full name (assuming they give you their correct name), and phone number. If this person is asking you for $60,000 or ANY money at all, they should be willing to give you even more information such as their address, date of birth, or whatever else you ask them for. A thorough background check can be done for as little as $19.99, so there is no reason for there to be a story about a woman being scammed out of $60,000 by someone using a fake name on Match.com.

If you think about it…when you set out to have an in-person meeting with someone you met on an online dating site or a dating app, you are literally placing your life in some stranger’s hands. Unless some type of background check was performed on the person you are going to meet, you usually know nothing more than what you saw in their dating profile. The obvious problem is that every bit of information in someone’s dating profile could be false. Even if you exchanged phone numbers and had conversations prior to meeting in person, you are still relying on whatever information your “love interest” is providing you with.

A man can show up for a date with a woman (or what he believes to be a woman) only to be robbed by individuals who have set up a fake dating profile for this express purpose. There have been numerous stories of these types of incidences in the news. Here is a story in which a man met a woman on the very popular online dating site Plenty of Fish, only to be lured by this woman to a house where he was robbed and beaten. If you are a female, the dangers you are exposing yourself to with these risky behaviors are endless.

The bottom line is that background checks can be done cheaply, accurately and efficiently, so online dating sites are being absolutely negligent by not even attempting to verify their users’ identities. It is entirely up to the users of these sites to make sure that they take all precautions and do their own due diligence to ensure their safety.

Here is yet another story that illustrates one of the many dangers of online dating. When people discuss the possible dangers of online dating, they usually focus on the dangerous situations women could find themselves in. However, we are seeing more and more that online dating can be just as dangerous for men. There have been numerous stories of criminals using dating profiles to trick men into showing up to specific locations for a “date” so they can rob them. This story is yet another incident of that same thing. In this instance, a fake profile of a woman was used to lure a man to her supposed address, and when he showed up he was robbed by two men.

There are hundreds of dating sites on the internet, and almost none of them conduct any type of background check on the people using them. This opens up the users of these sites to all sorts of potential dangers ranging from fraud to acts of violence. It is imperative that users of these sites do their due diligence to verify the identities of the people they have an interest in. Some simple ways in which this can be done is by trying to crosscheck online profiles against social media profiles, and doing google image searches to make sure that profile pictures are not random images from the internet. In any case, a proper background check is always the best way to go, and usually only requires a person’s name and date of birth to get the ball rolling.

Arranged marriages have been a thing of the past for some time now (at least in Western countries), therefore, “dating” is more or less a necessary part of life for most adults. I have made numerous posts and blogs addressing some of the issues of concern surrounding the dating scene, especially as it pertains to online dating, but I have decided to do it once again (one mo’ ‘gin). This time though, I won’t spend much time expressing my own opinions, I will just be including links to some scary stories already in the news. I suggest that anyone using an online dating service take the time to read a few of these articles. I also suggest that you do your due diligence, which should include running a background check on any potential “love” interest before meeting him or her.

Man going to meet woman from internet dating site ends up being robbed at gunpoint

Calgary woman charged in Fletcher Kimmel’s homicide met him via online dating site

Hopefully these stories have convinced some of you to proceed with caution when getting into a new relationship. Also, please remember that running a background check on someone you meet online is an essential part of proceeding with caution.

…..For people who don’t want to be scammed, sexually assaulted, murdered, or suffer any major disappointments.

Only use dating sites that perform some sort of background check.

Remember that Tinder is a hookup app…. not a dating app.

Be suspicious of everyone you meet on dating sites and dating/hookup apps.

If you get a bad feeling about someone you meet online, trust your instincts and move on.

When meeting someone for the first time, meet them in a public area.

Volunteer as little personal information as possible (address, employer, etc.) until you really get to know the person you are interacting with.

If you have children, the only thing people should know about them is that you have them. Not their names, not their social media profiles, and not their SCHOOL!

Consider it a red flag when someone you meet online tells you any type of sob story.

Do your due diligence to verify people’s identities. If your dating site does not require background checks, you may have to use other means. You can visit your love interest’s social media pages, have them text you pictures, or use FaceTime or Skype.

NEVER SEND MONEY TO ANYONE. FOR ANY REASON. EVER!
