What are the advantages of running a national criminal background check as opposed to a single state background check? Let’s talk about it.
Several months ago I had a consultation with a business owner who was seeking background screening services for his company in Maryland. This client only wanted to run a single state criminal record search. His rationale was that since he has the addresses of his potential candidates, and therefore knows what state they live in, he only needed to run a criminal background check for those specific states.
The problem with this is there is nothing stopping an individual from travelling to a different state to commit a crime. Someone living in Maryland may be charged with a crime when he visited Virginia or Washington, D.C., or when he was on vacation in Las Vegas. If a candidate has charges in Virginia, Washington, D.C., or Las Vegas, this will not show up on a statewide criminal search in Maryland. Conducting a background check for a single state only, will only uncover criminal charges for that particular state.
If a company is looking for the most cost effective method of running a background check, my recommendation is the National Criminal Background Check. This is a powerful, virtually instant multi-jurisdictional nationwide search. This database is compiled from counties, Departments of Corrections (DOC), Administrations of the Court (AOC), and state sex offender registries from across the country. Also included in each search are national and international terrorism sources such as the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). This search also includes the National Sex & Violent Offender Database, and the Foreign Nationals Database (Global Report).
